Braedyn is a normal girl just trying to survive high school with her two devoted friends, Royal and Cassie. Together they're doing a pretty good job of shrugging off the slings and arrows cast their way by the popular crowd when a new boy, Lucas, moves into the house next door. Suddenly Braedyn finds herself falling in love for the first time.

But as her 16th birthday approaches, Braedyn discovers humankind is at war with the Lilitu, an ancient race of enticing demons that prey on human souls. Her father is a member of the Guard fighting against the Lilitu - and so are the new neighbors, including her crush, Lucas.

As her world starts to unravel at the seams, Braedyn learns the right answers aren't always clear or easy. And as for "good" and "evil" - it all depends on how we choose to act.

Inspired by the ancient Mesopotamian myths of Lilith and her offspring, Thrall explores first love, strong friendships, and taking on adult responsibilities against the backdrop of powerful supernatural forces and life-and-death stakes.

Thrall A Daughters of Lilith Novel Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jennifer Quintenz Kristin Hatcher Secret Tree Press Books

You know, I’m a fan of the supernatural. I’m of the mind that anything can (and probably does) exist…even if it’s not in the way we think. Angels, demons and offspring of the two. I’ve always been fascinated with the possibility of such things, though I haven’t read many books with that premise. My latest read, Thrall (Daughters of Lilith #1) tackles the subject in an entertaining, if not familiar way.

So, Thrall has us following Braedyn, a young woman who after her 16th birthday, discovers that she is a Lilitu, a demon that feeds off the soul or life force of others (in other words, a succubus). Now, as I said before, I haven’t read many stories revolving around a character that is a succubus, but I did enjoy Quintenz’s take on the supernatural creatures. Whenever dealing with supernatural creatures such as demons and angels, there is a risk that the story will become bogged down by the religious background of these creatures. Thankfully, that’s not the case for Thrall. Quintenz focuses on characters, rather than the religious hogwash a lot of supernatural stories have. Though, that’s not to say it isn’t there, because it is; it’s just plays second fiddle to character drama and the threat of the coming war.

Speaking of character drama, there’s a lot of it in this book. Braedyn learns she’s a demon, which puts her at odds with members of the team of hunters that, well hunt and kill Lilitu, most of whom have lost a loved one to Lilitu. You can guess how having one on your team would go over with them. Not only that, but since our mc is in high school, we get a healthy dose of realistic high school drama, including jealousy, backstabbing and love. All of this was believable and took me back a few years to when I was in high school and every little thing seemed like the end of the world. Though, I’ll admit I never had to worry about an ancient war between the Daughter of Lilith and the Sons of Adam.

Thrall manages to skirt the line between cliché and unpredictable. It kept me interested with its clever approach to demons and the angel-backed hunters that are up against them, as well as the turmoil our mc faces when she tries to come to terms with what she is, and what that means to those she loves and the world as a whole. I think that one of the areas Thrall falls flat, however, is the romance between our mc and her love interest, Lucas. I just couldn’t get behind it; it felt a bit rushed and unearned. All in all though, this was a quick and enjoyable read. I’ll be picking the next one in the series to see where things go from here, because things are set in motion near the tail end of the book that piqued my interest. Plus, I’m hoping the side characters get some time to shine since they weren’t really that memorable.

Thrall A Daughters of Lilith Novel Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jennifer Quintenz Kristin Hatcher Secret Tree Press Books Reviews

It's been a really long time since I read a YA novel. I feel a little silly admitting this, but it sort of made me feel like a young girl again. And I can't believe Twilight is more popular than this series! I weep for teenagers everywhere who are missing out on good writing, good plot, good characters, and a good storyteller!

Before I continue with the review, I just want to call SPOILER ALERT.

I was delighted with the way Thrall began and I admired the way the writer was able to keep all her characters distinct from one another for the reader. I loved the safe but pretty and vivid imagery, "dusting of the Milky Way," "social camouflage," "her dress flowed around her like mercury," etc. Her writing style makes me sigh with relief for the clarity of thought, which is probably her most admirable quality. Each word is chosen with precision, and she makes it seem so easy, but as a writer myself, I know it is not.

Despite the story containing the usual trope of "teenage girl discovers she's actually really powerful and falls for a hot guy she can't have," the plot was quite strong, logical, and had plenty of juicy twists and surprisingly, a sense of humor!

I have to say though, I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half. And the battle at the end was a disappointment. I anticipated something grander, more dramatic, and perhaps set in the dreamscape that the Lilitu are capable of navigating. I also expected a rare male Lilitu to show up, but I imagine Jennifer Quintenz is saving that for later.

Obviously Ms. Quintenz is held back by the fact that, yes, this is a young adult novel and cannot make things sexually explicit now, maybe never. But the fact of the matter is that Lilitu demons, or succubi or incubi (male sex demons), accounts of which are found throughout ancient civilizations, are sexual creatures who prey on men for their seed, blood and perhaps even lives. (A modern succubus frequents the Ancient Ram Inn in Gloucester, England, on an intersection between two earth energy paths called ley lines. The creature is reprehensibly, irrevocably evil, and repelled by the name of God. I find it a little bit hard to accept that a Lilitu can exhibit goodness, and don't particularly like glorifying a demoness, but that's just me.) I appreciate that there were no curse words or severe delinquent behavior (drinking, smoking, stealing, etc) on the part of the teenagers, but I prefer raw authenticity to a brighter, censored version. There were a few unexpected dark turns in the novel, however, like finding out Cassie slept with Parker in front of his creepy friends who were secretly watching, or finding out that Parker attempted suicide as a result of Braedyn's malicious foray into his dream. The world of the Lilitu and the mythology the author created was also very cohesive, which is much appreciated, not just by me, but by readers everywhere who feel cheated when the author doesn't take the time to connect things properly. So, thank you!

I give this story four stars because of the disappointing climax and fight scene at the end, some repetitiveness (Lucas and Braedyn being all lovey-dovey all the time; too many instances of physical training for Braedyn) and the language which was so fresh, crisp and descriptive at the beginning, but grew tired and lackluster towards the second half of the book. I also thought the language sometimes didn't sound like a fifteen-to-sixteen year old girl, but someone a few years older.

But the most important thing is to have readers come back for more. That being said, you can count me in for the rest of the series.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Couldn't wait to find out what was on the next page...Deff plenty of action, and romance of course when you're a succubus, even if it's only in DREAM, Love Braedyn and Lucas, Murphy and the rest of the guard...Can't wait to start the second installment, hoping she comes more into her powers and maybe fig out a way to control her powers and be with Lucas other than a dream state..WISHFUL THINKING...So deff recommend this series!!! Can't wait to see if Braeydon can stop the Ancients!!! Off to read Incubus!!! Thank You Jennifer for the free Insta Book...Much Appreciated, New Favorite Author.💕
