As a longtime follower of Tempus and his Sacred Band, I’d thought I’d read everything there was to read about their adventures. Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered The Fish the Fighters and the Song-Girl, an intelligent and skillfully interwoven set of tales presented in novel format.
Simply put, Sanctuary, city of thieves and a stain on the backside of the Rankan Empire comes under attack from a strange race of fisher folk – the Beysib – from across the sea. Normally the city would turn to the Stepsons under such circumstances to save them. However, Tempus has led his Sacred Banders north into uncharted territory. Left alone, it falls to the rag-tag inhabitants of Sanctuary to defend themselves whilst combating the threat of narcissistic politicians, out to take what they can get for themselves.
Will Sanctuary’s sheer bloody-mindedness prevent her fall? And just what is it that delays the Sacred Band? What’s more, why is it that magic seems to be failing?
In all honesty, I found The Fish the Fighters and the Song-Girl to be a welcome addition to this complex world. By weaving elements of the past, present and future together with old and news foes and characters alike, Janet and Chris Morris have added a fresh layer to an already elaborate masterpiece that will stand the test of time.
An excellent compilation that has deepened my appreciation for what is surely one of the best saga’s in the Homeric tradition for a long time.

The Fish the Fighters and the SongGirl Sacred Band of Stepsons Sacred Band Tales 2 Sacred Band Series Janet Morris Chris Morris 9780985166830 Books Reviews

The Sacred Band is leaving Sanctuary just when that hellhole of a town needs defenders. A ragged thief named Zip leads a group of rebels against Sanctuary’s invaders, yet he’s unlikely to succeed on his own. Tempus has led his Stepsons and Thebans north, leaving Sanctuary to sink or swim on its own. Along the way, the Band tell each other tales of former exploits while contending with new and frightening supernatural adversaries such as the Sphinx. Wraiths visit Band members while they dream, bringing sickness and a sleep that won’t end. Can Cassander, Band healer, aid his warrior comrades?

This novel contains all our favorite characters while introducing new ones. I was pleased to see two female fighters join the Sacred Band. The stand-out quote for me in this collection was “Nothing walks the earth more savage than a mare enraged.” As an incurable lover of all things horse, this quote for me epitomized the deep understanding Janet Morris has of horses. Her novels contain many references to the use of horses in war, and bad things inevitably happen. Yet she deals with the subject in a sensitive and knowledgeable way, and without compromise. Her characters rely on their horses; love their horses; fight alongside their horses; and sometimes, watch their horses die. Her skillful word-weaving has me laughing, crying, despairing and celebrating along with them. You can’t ask more than that from an author.

Highly recommended by Cas Peace, author of the Artesans of Albia fantasy series.
I really liked this sequel to The Sacred Band -which I also reviewed earlier- and I hope to see more from Janet Morris in this alternate universe. Please note however that this is definitely a sequel, not really a stand alone novel.

Which is not a negative from my point of view, because this is aimed at readers who love long, sprawling, complex stories with a gritty edge and a full cast of unconventional characters.
Nice to see Tempus and the Sacred Band back together for one last romp. Ties up loose ends after the Meridian war, but hopefully will lead to more stories!

Life and Everlasting Glory!
Ride with The Sacred Band on some of its most harrowing missions yet. Sanctuary, the city of thieves, and backwater of the Rankan Empire, has become beset by strange fish-folk invaders from across the sea called The Beysib. An enigmatic Song-Girl foretells of strife and woe, and Sanctuary is torn apart by rival political factions all warring for control of the city. To make matters worse, Tempus Thales decides to lead his Sacred Band out of the city they have sworn to protect, just when it needs them the most. What will befall the denizens of Sanctuary when the Sacred Band, and even the gods have abandoned them? Meanwhile, virtually all the powers of magic have burnt themselves out in a conflagration of sorcerous fire by the Nisibisi witch, Roxane, know as Death's Queen. Will the Popular Front for the Liberation of Sanctuary and it's leader, Zip, free the city from its exotic oppressors? And what new adventures await The Sacred Band outside of Sanctuary?
You'll definitly want to read this latest epic saga of the Sacred Band of Stepsons to find out.
Don't really know if this is a five star book. But it was extremely enjoyable to me. It's nice being back in Sanctuary. Like a line of the finest krrf.....
