Wicked Lovely Desert Tales Volume 1 Sanctuary Melissa Marr Xian Nu Studio Books
I am totally in love with the vibrant world Melissa Marr has crafted, and when I found out there was going to be a manga, I was so excited! I picked up the first volume soon after it was released, and zipped through it in less than an hour.I haven't been in any hurry to pick up the other two volumes.
The story focuses on Rika, a former Winter Girl who, after loosing her humanity, prefers the remoteness of the desert. She shuns visits from her former lover, the Summer King Keenan, and refuses his offers to come to court. She misses the life she once had, and prefers to remain invisible, literally and figuratively. But then her emotions get the better of her, and she ends up falling for a human, Jayce.
Already a lover of manga before I got this, and quite familiar with the sometimes odd flow they have, I found this to be very jumpy and confusing. Perhaps it's because I'm only on volume one, but as mentioned above, despite my great love for anything Wicked Lovely, I haven't been in any hurry at all to get volumes two and three.
The thing I liked the best about this, aside from getting to see the desert fae and getting a glimpse at another Winter Girl aside from Donia, is official artwork of Keenan! He is one of my favorite characters, and while some may say it isn't canonical since this is manga, I say it still has Melissa's stamp of approval on it, and thus this amazing bishie is Keenan. I can only hope that when the movie adaptation finally makes its way onto the big screen, they'll get an actor with similar looks. Something people must remember is that, while HandsomeActor may have the perfect attitude to be Keenan, he is a FAERY king. Humanoid male faeries are typically androgynous, so while yes, I personally think Paul Wesley (Stefan, for all you TVD fans) would make a really good Keenan, I don't think he should have the part because his features are just not delicate enough.
When it all boils down, should you buy this to have a complete collection of Wicked Lovely books? Yes. Are you going to be wowed? No.

Wicked Lovely Desert Tales Volume 1 Sanctuary Melissa Marr Xian Nu Studio Books Reviews
I felt the original book series for wicked Lovely was much better than desert tales, although it was interesting to find out about one of Keenan's ex-summer girls. But the character design for Keenan was waaay off from the original.
Faires <3
i got my book right on time in better shape then promised i would so order from them again and i love the book witch i read before i bought so i knew that
Loved this story
I bought this item along with Fragile Eternity. I read the book first and was left wanting more. But when I read this I loved the character and the idea about having stories about the other girls Keenan had picked. Melissa's characters outside Ash and Keenan are so much more interesting and fun to read about. I can't wait for the next installment!
I've read all of Melissa Marr's faery series and I used to love a good manga, so when I saw Desert Tales V2 at a consignment bookshop I snatched it up and came here for V1 and V3.
I think you miss a lot of the character developement that you get from Melissa's traditional books, but I love having the visual aspect that you can't get from them. I plan to buy the traditional style Desert Tales and read that as well to see if there really was more to the story I didn't get in the manga.
I think the manga series was a fun attempt at something new, and for $4 or $5 each I think they were more than worth the read; either way these three books are staying on my "prized" shelf as a pretty hybrid of my two favorite concepts.
Artwork is nice
Story is just bland
