Nightvisions is an escape into a hauntingly beautiful world of complex politics and nuanced characters. Brown introduces us to an intricately imagined world on the verge of political collapse. From a fall lantern festival on the river to descriptions of the dark frigid winter, Brown’s descriptions of Fensmere’s religion, climate, architecture, food, and dress allow it to take on its own life in the reader’s imagination. Telling much of the story through witty and incisive dialogue which sometimes had me simultaneously laughing and crying, Brown develops a large cast of nuanced and quirky characters, each struggling with a unique past and working to tilt the uncertain future of Lowair. In Lowair, magecraft is powerful, but it comes at a high price: the magecraft sickness. This and the emotionally taxing nature of inborn magecraft strain both familial and romantic relationships. Brown alternates between chapters from the perspective of our heroes, Pyri and Rohin, and interludes which give us glimpses into the perspective of almost every other character we meet. Amazingly, Brown needed only a 400 page book to make me fall completely in love with a world and ten central characters. I cannot wait to know what comes next!Tags : Nightvisions (The Magecraft Curses) [M.T. Brown] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Nightvisions The Magecraft Curses MT Brown 9780692185636 Books Reviews
Nightvisions has some of the snappiest, funniest, and, at times, wrenching dialog I've seen in fantasy. A couple of places I laughed out loud (Go Thera!). A nice dollop of romance and sexual tension between characters to keep things lively. Interesting world building - the city of Fensmere feels vaguely European - familiar yet different. Innovative use of magecraft.
I read a ton, and get book recommendations from friends, websites, facebook, etc, so my queue on my is quite long and I forget where I got the recommendation from. This book came up in my queue, and I thought it looked interesting, read it, loved it, and when I got to the acknowledgements, I realized it was written by my ex-sister-in-law's daughter! My ex-sister-in-law is the one who told me about it! The world that Maia created is quite multi-faceted, and the characters are well-developed and likeable. The only thing I didn't like is that it ended too soon! I will be looking forward to book two.
