Book Review- Grace Unexpected by Gale Martin

Grace and her sister-in-law Rae take a vacation to visit the Shaker settlements. Grace can’t believe they led a celibate life. She could never do that. In fact she is expecting her boyfriend Christian to propose. Unfortunately her expectations didn’t come to fruition. Plus she had to respond to an emergency at the university she works at. Being the media director is quite the job. She is confronted by a reporter named Addison. She doesn’t want to talk to him except for the barest quote. She doesn’t trust him. She has also decided to swear of men and get on the Shaker plan. Addison seems interested in Grace but he is too young and she is following her plan. Then she signs up for an anthropology class with True. He is hot for an older man. He may be too old for her but it doesn’t matter because she is on the plan.
Things get complicated with both of them vying for her attention. Plus she has an enemy in the office trying to get rid of her. Grace has to be careful and strong to do the right thing.
This story started off in a funny tone. Grace rolling her eyes at the Shaker lifestyle was a bit comical. Then her luck just plummets. I felt bad for her. She swears off men. Of course then she catches the eye of two. That’s how it always happens. That was a bit predictable. However the author tortured Grace with both men. Then when she learns who they really are, she is shocked. I suspected they knew each other and her boss Doris is smack dab in the middle of the mess. You knew it wasn’t going to end well.
The conniving co-worker was almost too much. I wish Grace could have punched her like she wanted. Would have made us both feel better I’m sure. It was an interesting story, not exactly what I expected. I give it a 3 out of 5.

In Grace Unexpected, Gale Martin has written a funny, crazy, off the wall story of love not quite requited. A page turner. Grace seems to go from one fiasco to the other in and out of the office as she searches for happiness and real love. Finally she has two eligible men interested, both excellent choices, and then she learns they are related. Eventually she has to choose which one she really loves. She made the right choice. You'll love this one. Check it out.
I wasn't expecting to laugh out loud so much! Grace Unexpected delight me with its colorful characters and sharp, witty dialogue, but the charming softhearted and strong-spirited nature of Grace Savage was the sweetest note of this book for me.

Gale Martin has created a beloved heroine with a talent for both getting into and finding the humor in some awful situations of love and heartbreak. I'd recommend this as a fun, light read for women who like a love story with some rollicking twists and turns with a dash of laughter that morphs into a groan of sympathy, then turns right back into another laugh.

I loved this book, it was hilarious and romantic at the same time!
Grace' boyfriend was not Mr. Right at all, he dumped her on her birthday, instead of asking her THE question. Inspired by the celibate shaker philosophy she adopted her own "Shaker Plan". However fate kicked in and soon things started to go in totally different directions, job-wise and love-life-wise.
Not only with one, but with two men, who compete for her affection. And at her university communications job, she has to vie with the brash daughter of a wealthy donor, who is trying to trick her out of her job. Amazing how she managed to out-smart this young women!
A fun, fast-paced read with witty dialogues, hilarious situations and a really surprising ending. I was sorry to finish the last chapter.
Grace Savage expects her boyfriend of two years to propose to her on her 35th birthday. Instead, he breaks up with her from behind a shower curtain and tells her she's not "long-term material." Deciding she's clearly not doing something right when it comes to her relationships with men, Grace decides to take a lesson from the Shakers, who in the late 1700s lived a life of celibacy, and give up sex. Suddenly two of the sexiest men on the college campus where she works take an interest in Grace, making this vow of celibacy more difficult than she ever expected. One of the men is 11 years younger than her and the other is 15 years older but it turns out the age difference is nothing compared to the other complications which arise when Grace attempts to choose between them. Oh, and someone is trying to sabotage her career on top of all of this!

I read this novel in one sitting while flying from NYC to Seattle and I loved it. Grace Unexpected has a little bit of everything - romance, mystery and a whole lot of humor. I laughed out loud on several occasions and found myself swooning over both of Grace's love interests. Although I predicted the twist before it was revealed, the ending had me on the edge of my seat because I really had no idea what direction the author would take. I am SO glad with the way it ended though. Great, fun read and I LOVED that it distracted me from a very turbulent flight )
The storyline is definitely for middle aged women who like a little romance and humor. It's funny in all the right p!aces. While I could foretell some events in the book there were also a few surprises. This is a must-read for any woman, but especially for those who enjoy humor and romance all rolled into one book.
